課程概述

This course is designed to prepare helping professionals to make active and purposeful use of their whole selves in their encounters with clients. Special focus will be on concepts of self-awareness, access of self, use-of-self and self-care. Students are encouraged to develop insight into their own personal life experiences, to realize the implications of these experiences, and to develop skills to intentionally use their own life experiences in facilitating therapeutic change. Students will also examine their self-care attitude and strategies. 

課程目標
1. To gain knowledge of the use of self in therapy
2. To identify one’s “self of the therapist issues” (生命主題,one’s personal life struggles, coping mechanisms and patterns of functioning)
3. To describe the evolution of self of the therapist issues and their impact on one’s personal and professional lives
4. To understand the clinical implications of the use of self
5. To develop and facilitate self-care for helping professionals
6. To reflect on how the course impacts on one personally and professionally 
課程要求
1. Punctuality, attendance, and active participation are expected. Students are required to read the assigned readings and to raise at least 1 discussion question. Each student chooses a fellow student to form a pair to engage in-class discussion to critically evaluate the required readings. The semester is divided into two-period, so students will switch partners to form two pairs in total.
2. Completion of assignments
a、 Assessment kit: Complete 3 assessment tools (Professional Quality of Life Scale, Self-Compassion Scale, Self-care Inventory) 3 times (before-, after- & one month after-the course).
b、 Self-awareness timeline (in class): Identify critical moments/events/context in your journey of self-awareness and record them in a timeline.
c、 “Wheel of emotions” oral presentation: Apply what you read from the book of 「黃金90秒情緒更新」 and creative use the tool of “wheel of emotions.” The presentation is on April, 17, 2023.
d、 Self-care sharing on May, 1, 2023.
e、 “Social location & Self of the therapist” oral presentation (by dyads): Make a 20-minute presentation to describe re: how specific domain(s) of the social location deepen(s) your understanding of your self-of-the-therapist issue(s). You might consider to include necessary information from your genogram, your family history and your clinical work.
f、 Course evaluation paper: Write a 3-5 page paper to describe your likes, dislikes, gains, and suggestions to this course content and design. The due date of the evaluation is on May 22, 2023.
g、 Books reading: (黃金90秒情緒更新)
3. Journaling (recommended): Write journals after each week’s class. The purpose of the journal is to help students to actively engage in self-reflection. The focus of attention is individual student’s personal insights about the class materials, in class discussions and/or other students’ presentations, & how individual student link those to their self of the therapist, personal and professional experience. Students could apply some content of the journals to the end of the semester reflection paper.
4. Final paper (by dyads): Write a 10-15 page paper to include: a). the content of your “Social location & Self of the therapist” oral presentation; b). the contribution of the course to your personal development (e.g. self-understanding, change to self, relational changes, etc.). It’s optional to include: c). how the results of the assessment kit inform you; d). how the assignment of self-awareness timeline inform you. The due date of this paper is on June. 5, 2023.
